The 33rd Ray
This fashion story plays on the bloody past of South Africaand highlights the new society that came into being after the country became ademocracy in 1994. The title, The 33rd Ray, refers to the architectural feature of the Voortrekker monument where sunlight passes through an opening of the roof on the 16th of December each year. This ray of light adds to the 32 symbolic rays that can be seen on the floor of the ground floor. Symbolically the architect Moerdijk intended the 33rd sun ray shining onto the stone in the midst of the abyss, to publicly highlight the creation of a new civilization in Africa. In the fashion story the model represents the 33rd ray and thus signifying the new democracy of South Africa.
